Yazmyn Stewart's path through the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is more than a personal narrative; it's a journey shaped by familial ties and a commitment to breaking barriers. Yazmyn's choice of an HBCU wasn't arbitrary; it was a legacy. Coming from a family with deep-rooted connections to Delaware State, Morgan State, and Saint Augustine’s University, Yazmyn embraced her HBCU experience to escape the alienation experienced in predominantly white schools. Her decision reflects a desire to be surrounded by a supportive community that believed in her potential.

Yazmyn's involvement extended beyond the classroom. A dedicated athlete, she contributed to UMES's Women's Volleyball team, showcasing her skills on the court. Her commitment to excellence also manifested in leadership roles, including president of UMES Student Athletic Advisory Committee and secretary of MEAC Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice, Yazmyn delved into the complexities of the legal system. Her academic journey was complemented by active participation in extracurricular activities, symbolizing a holistic approach to education.

Yazmyn's favorite moments encapsulate the essence of HBCU life – from being an athlete, traveling, and experiencing diverse HBCU cultures to participating in homecoming season and spring fest. These moments underscore the unique blend of unity and diversity that defines the HBCU family.

For Yazmyn, attending an HBCU meant finding a home where she didn't feel small. The culture and experience at HBCUs, according to her, are incomparable to predominantly white institutions. Black students, surrounded by a community that shares similar experiences, find a space to learn, thrive, and embrace their identity. HBCUs, in Yazmyn's perspective, represent black excellence.

Yazmyn's 3.5-year HBCU journey was transformative. Through highs and lows, she grew, matured, and gained insights into the real world. The freshman Yaz entering UMES evolved into a resilient graduate, equipped with knowledge, life experiences, and a network she considers family.

Yazmyn's preparation for college began early, emphasizing academic excellence and extracurricular involvement. Her advice to prospective HBCU students is grounded in the belief that dreams require hard work, especially for black students who may face additional challenges. Yazmyn encourages them to trust their abilities and defy limitations imposed by others.
