For T’ona McBride, the decision to attend North Carolina Central University (NCCU) was driven by a desire for a sense of belonging. Having experienced a K-12 journey where she often felt like the minority, attending an HBCU became a deliberate choice to pursue higher education among individuals who looked like her.

Beyond the academic realm, T’ona’s HBCU journey unfolded as a vibrant fabric of involvement, where her dedication extended into various extracurricular spheres. Within the Lady Eagle Development (LED) organization, she served as the Community Service Coordinator in 2019-2020, donned the title of Miss LED in 2020-2021, and assumed the role of Vice President in 2021-2022. As an integral part of the Aspiring Eagles Academy from 2018 to 2023, she contributed as a dedicated general member. T’ona's commitment also extended to the Football Department, where she served as the Equipment Manager from 2018 to 2022 and later transitioned into the role of Football Operations Assistant in 2022-2023. Through these diverse roles, T’ona wove a narrative of active engagement, leaving an indelible mark on the multifaceted fabric of her HBCU experience.

Some of T’ona’s favorite moments include meeting her best friend, Journey, stepping out of her comfort zone through annual travels, forging lifelong friendships, and experiencing the blessing of a Gospel Concert by Le’Andria Johnson during homecoming. The pinnacle of her HBCU journey was clinching the HBCU National Championship at the Celebration Bowl in December 2022.

T’ona firmly believes that attending an HBCU is vital for young African Americans. The curriculum, crafted specifically for and by their community, fosters an indescribable sense of connection and empowerment.

Her HBCU experience became a preparation ground for the real world, teaching her that wonderful things can unfold in unexpected ways. T’ona learned the importance of recognizing the potential in everyone she encountered, as they might hold the keys to future success as CEOs, doctors, lawyers, and more. The journey at NCCU emphasized the perpetual room for growth and improvement.

Reflecting on her preparation for college, T’ona emphasizes that every process is unique. Trusting one’s instincts and finding the right groove is crucial. She encourages prospective students to believe in themselves and follow their intuition throughout the preparation journey.

T’ona McBride’s matriculation through North Carolina Central University exemplifies the transformative power of HBCUs. Her story is a testament to the impact of education, community, and self-belief in shaping a successful and fulfilling college experience.
