The Power of Choosing an HBCU #WSSU
I’m Amaria Webb, a proud graduate of Winston-Salem State University, Class of 2026. When I chose to attend an HBCU, I was not just thinking about academics. I was looking for a place where I could grow, feel seen, and truly belong. What I found was more than a university. I found a home.
From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt the difference. Being surrounded by people who uplift, support, and understand each other created an environment where I could thrive. It pushed me to become the best version of myself, not just in the classroom, but in every area of my life.
I made it a priority to get involved, and that decision shaped my entire experience. I became a part of the Powerhouse of Red and White, served as Miss Kappa Alpha Psi for the Delta Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., joined the Campus Activities Board, contributed to the Campus Life Marketing Committee, and expressed my creativity through Epiphany Modeling Troupe. Every space I stepped into helped me grow in confidence, leadership, and purpose.
“At WSSU, I learned how to walk into any room knowing I belong there.”
One of the most defining moments of my journey was winning the title of Miss Kappa Alpha Psi. I had never done a pageant before, and stepping into that experience pushed me completely out of my comfort zone. There were moments of doubt, but I leaned into the process, trusted myself, and embraced the support around me. Winning was not just about the crown. It was about proving to myself that I am capable of more than I ever imagined. That moment changed how I see myself.
Majoring in Sports Management with a concentration in Sport Communications gave me the tools to pursue my career with confidence. Beyond academics, my HBCU experience prepared me for the real world in ways I did not expect. I built meaningful relationships with mentors, alumni, and peers who poured into me and helped guide my path. I learned how to network, how to carry myself, and most importantly, how to walk into any room knowing I belong there.
Choosing an HBCU means choosing a community that pours into you. It is a place where you can build your identity, grow in confidence, and be surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you succeed. That environment is powerful, and it stays with you long after graduation.
As I prepared for college, I made sure I understood the application and financial aid process, but I also prepared myself mentally. I knew I had to be open to new experiences and willing to step outside my comfort zone. For anyone considering an HBCU, my advice is simple. Do your research, visit campuses if you can, and come ready to get involved. Be open, be confident, and allow yourself to grow.
My journey at Winston-Salem State did not just shape my future. It transformed me.
