Finding My Confidence at Alabama A&M

My name is Kirsten Tigner, and I am a proud student of Alabama A&M University, Class of 2026, where I am pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Manufacturing.

My decision to attend an HBCU came from my experiences in high school. I was often one of the only Black students in my classes, especially in advanced math and engineering courses. While I was passionate about those subjects, there were times when I felt isolated and out of place. I knew I wanted something different for my college experience.

Choosing an HBCU gave me the opportunity to step into an environment where I could truly thrive both academically and culturally. I wanted to be surrounded by people who looked like me, shared similar experiences, and were also striving for excellence in fields like engineering. Coming to Alabama A&M gave me that sense of belonging I had been missing.

During my time on campus, I became a member of Eta Kappa Tau Engineering Fraternity, Incorporated. This experience helped me grow both professionally and personally. It allowed me to connect with like minded students and further develop my skills in leadership and collaboration.

“I was often one of the only Black students in my classes, and I wanted more than that.”

Some of my favorite moments at Alabama A&M have come from both the big traditions and the everyday experiences. Homecoming stands out as one of the highlights. The energy, the pride, and the sense of community are something you have to experience to truly understand. At the same time, it is the smaller moments that meant just as much. Sitting in the café with friends, laughing, having real conversations, and building genuine relationships. Those moments are where lifelong bonds were created.

One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been the connections I have built. The friendships and support system I found here go beyond the classroom and will stay with me long after graduation.

Attending an HBCU has also helped me grow in ways I did not expect. I was not always the most outgoing person and often stayed to myself, especially in environments where I did not feel like I fully belonged. Being at Alabama A&M changed that. Surrounded by supportive peers and professors who encouraged me, I stepped out of my comfort zone and became more confident in expressing my ideas, working with others, and building relationships.

Academically, my experience strengthened my foundation in Mechanical Engineering through challenging coursework, group projects, and hands on learning. I developed problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills that will carry with me into my career.

HBCUs offer more than just an education. They provide a supportive environment where students are valued, challenged, and pushed to reach their full potential. Professors are invested, the community is strong, and the culture creates a sense of pride and belonging that is unmatched.

Preparing for college required intention. I focused on my academics, researched schools, and made sure I chose the right environment for me. I also made it a priority to apply for as many scholarships as possible. I understood that college is an investment. That preparation allowed me to ease financial stress and stay focused on my education once I arrived on campus.

For future students, I would say do your research, stay organized, and take advantage of every opportunity available to you. Be open to growth and willing to step outside your comfort zone. The more you put into your HBCU experience, the more you will get out of it.

For me, Alabama A&M University has been more than just a place to earn a degree. It has been a place where I found my confidence, built lasting relationships, and grew into the person I am today.
