The HBCU Experience That Changed My Life
My name is Denise McDonald, and I am a proud graduate of Alabama A&M University, Class of 2025. When I made the decision to attend an HBCU, I wasn’t just choosing a school, I was choosing an experience. I wanted to be surrounded by culture, connection, and a sense of family that I didn’t have before. Alabama A&M gave me exactly that.
From the moment I arrived on campus, I felt like I belonged. There was a sense of community that made everything feel different. It wasn’t just about going to class, it was about being part of something bigger. I found my place through involvement in organizations like the Ward Modeling Troupe, Gospel Choir, and Housing Council. Each experience helped shape me, building my confidence and allowing me to grow into myself.
Some of my favorite moments at Alabama A&M are memories I will carry with me forever. Celebrating the 150th anniversary homecoming was unforgettable. Hosting the first ball on campus was a full circle moment that showed me how far I had come. From the concerts to being one of the first residents in the newly renovated Thigpen Dorm, every experience added to the joy and energy that makes HBCUs so special.
My HBCU experience prepared me for the real world in ways I didn’t expect. Through opportunities provided by the Career Development Center, including career fairs, panels, and hands-on experiences, I developed the confidence to walk into any room and speak with purpose. Alabama A&M taught me how to show up, stand out, and be ready for every opportunity placed in front of me.
The more you put into your HBCU experience, the more you’ll get out of it.
For students considering attending an HBCU, my advice is simple: come in with an open mind and be ready to fully engage. Get involved, build relationships, and take advantage of every opportunity. The more you put into your experience, the more you will get out of it. At the same time, stay grounded and don’t lose yourself in titles.
Attending an HBCU is truly about finding your village. It is a place where people pour into you, support you, and grow with you. The connections you make will extend far beyond your college years. The HBCU family is everywhere, and those relationships will open doors you never imagined.
Alabama A&M didn’t just give me a degree. It gave me confidence, community, and a foundation that will carry me for the rest of my life.
