A Spartan for Life #NSU
Tariq Morton-Wynn | Biology Pre-Professional | Norfolk State University | Class of Fall 2025
My name is Tariq Morton-Wynn, and I am a proud graduate of Norfolk State University, Class of Fall 2025. I earned my degree in Biology Pre Professional, and my time at Norfolk State shaped me academically, personally, and professionally.
I chose to attend an HBCU because I loved the atmosphere they bring. There is something powerful about stepping onto a campus where culture, pride, and excellence are woven into everyday life. Norfolk State meant even more to me because my mom and my uncle are both graduates. Following in their footsteps and earning my degree from the same esteemed university felt like continuing a family legacy. It was bigger than just attending college. It was about honoring where I come from while building where I am going.
While at Norfolk State, I was involved in biology research projects in surrounding areas. Those opportunities allowed me to apply what I was learning in the classroom to real world environments. Being able to step outside of theory and into hands on experience strengthened my passion for the medical field and sharpened my discipline as a student.
Homecoming will always be my favorite experience. The atmosphere that an HBCU homecoming brings is unmatched. Seeing generations of successful Black graduates gather together to celebrate the university that brought us all together is something I will never forget. Every year felt like a family reunion filled with pride, tradition, and unity. It reminded me that I was part of something that extends far beyond four years on campus.
Students should attend HBCUs because the atmosphere sets you up for success in life. It is not just beneficial for Black students but for anyone who chooses to attend. A home like experience is created where professors are truly invested in their students. They are not simply there to lecture. They are there to teach, mentor, and help create a pathway for each student’s success. The bonds and friendships formed at an HBCU last a lifetime and continue to prosper long after you walk across the graduation stage.
After graduating, I stepped directly into the medical field. I quickly realized how prepared I was. Navigating my weekly workload felt natural because of the strong educational foundation I received at Norfolk State. Many of my professors went beyond the curriculum to ensure we were ready for the real world. They prepared us not only to pass exams but to excel in professional spaces.
Before college, I participated in a dual enrollment program through my high school, which allowed me to earn introductory college credits before enrolling at my four year university. That experience helped ease the transition, but I have learned that no matter how prepared you think you are, college is also about discovering who you are. When I first enrolled, I was an interdisciplinary studies major. After attending an on campus event and discovering my love for the medical field, I changed my path to Biology. HBCUs give you the time and space to figure yourself out in a welcoming environment so you can pursue something you truly love.
Norfolk State University gave me more than a degree. It gave me clarity, confidence, and a foundation that continues to guide me as I grow in the medical field. I will always carry that Spartan pride with me.
