Matt Stanley: NCCU and Norfolk State University

Name: Matt Stanley, graduate of Norfolk State University (also attended NCCU)

Degree: Business Marketing

Being adopted into a predominantly white family, I felt a void in my connection to the African-American community. This led me to choose an HBCU for its emphasis on empowerment, educational growth, and a stronger sense of cultural identity. Additionally, it offered an opportunity to excel in the sport I was passionate about.

During my time at NCCU and Norfolk State University, I was not only a baseball player but also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. I actively participated in the Mentorship Program, Male Initiative, and SAAC. Memorable moments included Homecoming, our probate, conference tournament games, activity hour, and the 10:40 break at NCCU.

NCCU and Norfolk State University equipped me for the real world by instilling a sense of independence and the need to balance various aspects of life simultaneously.

Students should consider attending HBCUs because they empower individuals to discover their identity, offering a diverse and culturally rich education applicable to the real world. While preparation is essential, the social presence and resilience gained during this experience become invaluable, especially for those navigating life on their own for the first time.
