Discovering My Voice Through Mass Communication at Norfolk State
Monica C. | Norfolk State University | B.S. in Mass Communication (General Broadcasting) | Class of 2025
My HBCU journey is one rooted in culture, growth, and self-discovery.
I chose to attend an HBCU because I deeply value higher education, especially African American higher learning. I wanted to pursue my degree in an environment where I was surrounded by peers who looked like me and shared similar cultural experiences. Being in a space designed to uplift and empower Black students was important to me, and I knew an HBCU would provide that sense of belonging while challenging me academically and personally.
At Norfolk State University, I found a space that allowed me to grow into my voice.
Throughout my time on campus, I became actively involved in several organizations that helped shape my confidence, leadership, and creativity. I served as Treasurer of the Political Science Association from 2023 to 2024, where I developed organizational and leadership skills. I was also a member of the Printed Revolution Modeling Troupe from 2023 to 2025, which allowed me to express myself creatively and step outside of my comfort zone. During the 2024–2025 academic year, I had the honor of serving as Miss Residential Hall Association, an experience that strengthened my ability to lead, represent my peers, and engage with the campus community.
Some of my favorite moments at my HBCU came early in my journey. My first semester freshman year in Fall 2021 is filled with nostalgic memories; moments of excitement, adjustment, and discovery that I will always cherish. Homecoming was another highlight every year, bringing together culture, tradition, and school pride in a way that reminded me why HBCUs are so special.
Academically, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with a concentration in General Broadcasting. My HBCU experience prepared me for the real world by teaching me fundamental skills and instilling discipline within myself. Norfolk State also encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone and get involved, which helped me grow personally and professionally. Through coursework, campus involvement, and real-world exposure, I gained confidence in my abilities and clarity in my goals.
“Norfolk State pushed me to grow, get involved, and develop discipline that prepared me for the real world.”
I believe students should attend HBCUs because they offer more than just a degree. HBCUs are culturally significant institutions that provide access to meaningful opportunities, strong networks, and connections within the African American community. They create environments that encourage students to grow, lead, and thrive while being supported every step of the way.
Preparing for college looked different for me, as I transitioned during the height of COVID. Despite the challenges, that experience taught me adaptability and resilience.
For prospective students, I encourage doing thorough research on different schools, choosing an HBCU that aligns with your goals and major, and taking advantage of campus tours whenever possible. Finding the right fit can make all the difference.
As a 2025 graduate, I leave Norfolk State University with confidence, discipline, and a deeper understanding of who I am. My HBCU journey helped shape my voice, strengthen my identity, and prepare me to navigate the world with purpose.
My story is a reminder that an HBCU education is not just about earning a degree; it’s about becoming empowered, prepared, and proud of who you are.
