Built by Community, Prepared for Purpose at Southern University
Milan Davis | Southern University and A&M College | B.S. in Marketing | Fall 2025 Graduate
My HBCU journey is one rooted in culture, confidence, and purpose.
In the middle of my college journey, I made the decision to transfer to an HBCU because I wanted a deeper connection to my culture and a stronger sense of belonging. From the moment I arrived, I felt seen, supported, and understood both academically and personally. Attending an HBCU was especially meaningful because it is part of my family legacy, and being connected to that tradition strengthened my pride, confidence, and sense of purpose.
At Southern University, I found more than an institution, I found alignment.
I was actively involved in campus life as a member of the Fabulous Dancing Dolls, an experience that became one of the most defining parts of my college journey. Being a Dancing Doll required discipline, time management, teamwork, and an unwavering level of commitment. It allowed me to represent school pride, tradition, and excellence while building confidence and lifelong connections. That experience sharpened my leadership skills and taught me how to balance academics with involvement, lessons I will carry with me well beyond college.
“At Southern University, I felt seen, supported, and understood both academically and personally”
One of the most meaningful milestones of my HBCU experience was becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Crossing into sisterhood and meeting my forever sisters is something I will cherish for a lifetime. Those relationships are rooted in love, service, and shared values, and they continue to shape who I am as a woman and leader.
Some of my favorite moments at my HBCU came from opportunities that placed me on national stages while representing Southern University. From earning a spot on the Fabulous Dancing Dolls to performing on The Jennifer Hudson Show and being part of the Super Bowl, these experiences were unforgettable. Each moment required dedication, discipline, and passion, and each one reinforced how HBCUs prepare students to shine anywhere they go.
Academically, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Marketing, which allowed me to develop strong communication, leadership, and strategic thinking skills. My HBCU experience challenged me to be accountable, adaptable, and confident in my abilities. Through rigorous coursework, mentorship, and hands-on involvement, I gained discipline, time management, and professional skills that translate directly into real-world spaces.
I believe students should attend HBCUs because they offer an environment centered on culture, community, and academic excellence. HBCUs foster a strong sense of belonging while encouraging students to grow intellectually, professionally, and personally. They emphasize leadership development, mentorship, service, and collective success; preparing students not just for careers, but for lifelong impact.
Preparing for college required discipline and intention. I took my academics seriously, developed strong time-management and study habits early on, and sought guidance from family and mentors who emphasized accountability and excellence. Learning how to balance responsibilities, advocate for myself, and remain disciplined allowed me to transition into college with confidence and independence.
As a Fall 2025 graduate, I leave Southern University with unforgettable memories, lifelong connections, and a deep sense of pride. My HBCU journey shaped my identity, strengthened my leadership, and prepared me to move forward with confidence, integrity, and cultural awareness.
My story is a reminder that attending an HBCU isn’t just about earning a degree, it’s about becoming who you’re meant to be. #HBCUPride!
