From the Marching 100 to Corporate America
My name is Damaine Thompson, and choosing to attend Florida A&M University was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
When I was deciding where to attend college, I wanted more than a degree. I wanted an environment that would challenge me professionally while affirming who I am personally. I wanted a place where Black excellence was the standard and where leadership, culture, and opportunity existed at every turn. At FAMU, I found exactly that.
From the moment I stepped on campus, I became part of a community that pushed me to grow. My professors invested in my success, mentors challenged me to think bigger, and my peers inspired me to pursue excellence in everything I did. Through internships, case competitions, and leadership opportunities, I developed skills that prepared me for life beyond college.
Being a member of the legendary Marching 100 was one of the highlights of my HBCU experience. The long rehearsals, game day performances, and opportunities to sing selections like "Total Praise" and "Praise Is What I Do" taught me discipline, commitment, and the value of being part of something greater than myself.
"Graduating debt free in three years showed me what is possible when purpose, discipline, and opportunity come together."
My involvement in the FAMU Gospel Choir and Concert Choir also played a major role in my journey. Those experiences allowed me to combine my passion for music with my desire to serve and inspire others. Every performance carried meaning and purpose.
Leadership became another important part of my story. Serving as Chapter President of the Omicron Gamma Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc. taught me how to lead with vision, serve with humility, and create impact through action. Watching our chapter grow and celebrating our accomplishments showed me what effective leadership truly looks like.
Academically, I challenged myself to pursue excellence. I competed in case competitions and earned placements in every competition I entered. Those experiences strengthened my confidence, sharpened my business skills, and opened doors that helped shape my future.
Some of my favorite memories came from the everyday moments. Late-night conversations with friends, laughter after meetings, celebrating accomplishments, and reflecting on how far we had come became memories I will cherish forever. One of my proudest achievements was graduating debt free in just three years.
As I prepare to begin my career with Fidelity Investments and pursue my MBA through Florida International University, I look back on my FAMU experience with gratitude. My HBCU gave me more than an education. It gave me confidence, purpose, leadership skills, lifelong relationships, and a foundation that will continue to guide me for years to come.
Attending an HBCU transformed my life. It helped me discover who I am, strengthened my belief in what I can achieve, and prepared me to lead with excellence wherever life takes me.
The best is yet to come.
