From Full Ride to Full Purpose at Morgan State University
Receiving a full ride to Morgan State University changed my life in ways I never could have imagined. What started as an opportunity to pursue my education became a journey filled with purpose, leadership, sisterhood, and personal growth. Attending an HBCU gave me so much more than a degree. It gave me a community that helped shape the woman I am becoming.
From the moment I stepped on campus, I felt surrounded by excellence, culture, and opportunity. I wanted to make the most of my experience, so I became involved in organizations that reflected both my passions and my commitment to service. During my time at Morgan, I was a part of the Clara I. Adams Honors College, Sisters in Medicine, the National Council of Negro Women, and the Muslim Student Association. I also had the honor of serving as a Student Ambassador for the university and being recognized as a Tina Tyler Hall Scholar. Every organization and leadership role helped me grow in different ways and pushed me to leave a positive impact wherever I went.
One of the most meaningful parts of my journey was becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.. Through sisterhood, scholarship, and service, I built lifelong bonds and continued a legacy that is bigger than myself. That experience taught me the importance of leadership, unity, and giving back to my community.
Some of my favorite moments at Morgan State University were the times when campus life truly came alive. Homecoming was always unforgettable because of the music, fashion, culture, and pride that filled the entire campus. I also loved I Love Morgan Week because it brought students together through school spirit, fun events, and appreciation for the university. Even the first day of classes each semester became special to me because it meant reconnecting with friends, embracing new opportunities, and starting another chapter of growth.
“Morgan State University helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally while keeping me grounded in who I am".”
As a Health Education major pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree, Morgan State University prepared me for more than just a career. My HBCU experience taught me how to communicate confidently, lead effectively, and navigate diverse environments while staying grounded in who I am. Through leadership opportunities, community engagement, and academic challenges, I developed resilience, accountability, adaptability, and strong problem-solving skills that will continue to guide me beyond college.
Morgan State University helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally while keeping me grounded in my identity. That is one of the reasons I believe students should attend HBCUs. These institutions provide more than an education. They create environments where students feel seen, valued, supported, and empowered. HBCUs celebrate Black excellence while helping students build confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong connections.
For students preparing to attend an HBCU, I believe it is important to focus not only on academics but also on personal growth. Understanding the culture, traditions, and history of HBCUs allows students to fully appreciate the experience and the legacy they are becoming a part of.
For me, Morgan State University became more than just a school. It became home, family, and the foundation for the future I am building.
