Four Years That Changed Everything

My name is Justus Harris, and I am a proud graduate of Bowie State University, Class of Fall 2025. Choosing to attend an HBCU was intentional for me. I wanted to be surrounded by people who looked like me, who came from similar backgrounds, and who understood my experiences. For the first time, I was not a minority. I was part of a community where I felt seen, supported, and understood.

My journey at Bowie State allowed me to fully immerse myself in my passion. As a Theatre Arts major with a concentration in Acting and Directing, I found my place in the Theatre Department. Serving as an Executive Producer gave me the opportunity to oversee productions and bring creative visions to life. It pushed me to grow as both a leader and an artist while holding me accountable to a high standard of excellence.

Some of my favorite memories came from the culture and experiences that make HBCUs so special. From the energy of homecoming to events like Torch Fest and Midnight Munchies, there was always something bringing students together. I also had the opportunity to be part of the DTLR tour, which was a standout moment during my time at Bowie. These experiences created memories that I will carry with me for life.

“Bowie State gave me the confidence to know I am the man for the job.”

Before attending Bowie, I experienced a predominantly white institution, and the difference was clear. At an HBCU, there is a level of care and community that is unmatched. People genuinely look out for one another, whether that is studying together or sharing opportunities that can help you grow. It is a different kind of support system that makes all the difference.

My HBCU experience gave me a new level of confidence. Knowing that I earned my degree and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.9 GPA changed the way I see myself. It reinforced the belief that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. That confidence shows up in every room I walk into, from job interviews to everyday life.

When I prepared for college, I started with my mindset. I set clear goals and stayed focused on achieving them. I made academics my priority and remained disciplined, even when distractions were present. While college is meant to be enjoyed, I always understood that earning my degree came first.

For future students, my advice is simple. Come in with a mindset to learn and grow. Build connections, stay focused, and take your academics seriously. The experiences will come, but your purpose should always lead the way.

Bowie State University gave me more than an education. It gave me confidence, discipline, and a community that poured into me. It showed me what it feels like to be surrounded by people who want to see you win.
