Finding Home, Purpose, and Power at Southern University
Madison Davis
Southern University | Bachelor of Science in Nursing | Fall 2025 Graduate
My HBCU journey is one rooted in legacy, leadership, and purpose.
I was inspired to attend an HBCU by my mother and aunt, both proud HBCU graduates. Their experiences showed me the importance of community, excellence, and the unmatched support that HBCUs provide. From the very beginning, I knew I wanted more than just a degree. I wanted an environment where I felt represented, understood, and surrounded by students who shared similar backgrounds, goals, and aspirations.
At Southern University, I didn’t just find a campus; I found a home.
Throughout my collegiate experience, I fully immersed myself in campus life and became actively involved in several student organizations that helped shape my confidence and leadership. One of my most impactful roles was serving as Captain of the Southern University Gold and Bluez Dance Team, where discipline, teamwork, and leadership were at the forefront. I was also involved with the Jaguar Activities Board, Jaguar Ambassadors, and Top Jags; each experience strengthening my connection to the university and the student body.
Some of my most cherished memories come from Bayou Classic weekend, an experience that felt like a true family reunion. Every year brought something new, but the sense of togetherness never changed. Seeing generations of alumni return to celebrate their shared Southern University experience showed me the lifelong impact of HBCU culture. Even during Thanksgiving, when we were away from our families, I never felt alone. Being surrounded by my dance team and fellow students reminded me that Southern was family.
“Attending an HBCU didn’t just educate me, it prepared me and shaped who I am today.”
Academically, I pursued a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a journey that required perseverance, resilience, and unwavering commitment. The challenges were real, but so was the support. My professors and peers pushed me to grow while always reminding me that I wasn’t alone. Looking back, I now realize that this balance was intentional because it mirrors the real world. My HBCU experience didn’t just educate me; it prepared me.
Attending an HBCU reshaped my perspective, strengthened my confidence, and solidified my sense of purpose. I truly believe HBCUs don’t just produce graduates, they create leaders who are prepared to make meaningful change in the world.
For prospective students, preparation is key. I prepared for college by applying for scholarships, seeking mentorship, and learning from students who came before me; especially fellow nursing students. Their guidance helped ease my nerves and allowed me to step onto campus focused, informed, and ready.
As a Fall 2025 graduate, I leave my HBCU journey with lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deep sense of pride.
My story is a reminder that attending an HBCU isn’t just about where you go, it’s about who you become along the way! #HBCUPride!
