Choosing to attend an HBCU was a decision rooted in the desire to immerse myself in a culture like no other. The rhythmic beats of the band during football games and the kaleidoscope of black culture on display during homecoming are experiences that defy replacement. Being at my HBCU allowed me to be my authentic self effortlessly – a privilege of seeing reflections of myself in the faces around me every day, a shared walk, and a familiar cadence of conversation that cannot be surpassed.

Graduating with a degree in Economics and a minor in Marketing was not just an academic triumph but a testament to the wealth of knowledge and opportunities an HBCU provides. Beyond the classroom, my journey was enriched by a spectrum of extracurricular activities, including roles in the Campus Activities Board (Public Relations), Ragin’ Rams (Student Events Officer), Ragin’ Rams (Public Relations Officer), and active participation in the Homecoming Committee.

Homecoming became a cherished annual tradition, a time when fellow students and alumni embraced each other, fostering a sense of unity and celebration. Supporting my HBCU's men’s basketball team during the CIAA in Baltimore, witnessing their triumph against the odds to secure the 2023 CIAA Championship, added another layer to my unforgettable HBCU experience. This journey also led me to become a proud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., further strengthening my connection to the HBCU legacy and sisterhood.

There is an unparalleled comfort that you feel as you step onto an HBCU campus. A feeling of immediate connection, a shared vibe, and the warmth of a family embrace make HBCUs unique. The relatability of professors, staff, and faculty, both inside and outside the classroom, contributes to an environment where you can truly be yourself. Being a part of rich history and building valuable networks that extend far beyond graduation are additional facets that set HBCUs apart.

HBCUs do more than prepare you for the real world; they equip you to conquer it. My HBCU experience at WSSU revealed that thriving and succeeding in this environment sets the stage for achieving extraordinary goals. The journey taught me essential life skills – networking, embracing authenticity, stepping out of my comfort zone – which, in turn, opened doors to numerous job opportunities in my field.

Preparation for my HBCU journey began during my senior year in high school. Attending campus events proved instrumental in laying the groundwork for a successful college experience. For prospective students, following the student body on platforms like Instagram, re-inventing yourself, and mentally preparing for the challenges of a new environment are crucial steps. The often-overlooked aspect of mental resilience and the constant process of personal growth are integral components of this transformative journey.

In conclusion, the decision to attend an HBCU was not just an academic choice but a life-altering journey, providing a cultural embrace, academic excellence, and personal growth that extend far beyond the campus gates. HBCUs prepare you not only for the real world but to carve your path in it, armed with a unique blend of knowledge, confidence, and an enduring sense of community.
